Lafarge to Construct Noise Barrier Retrofit for the City of Calgary, Marking Expansion into Precast Wall Panel Construction

Lafarge Canada Inc., a trusted leader in sustainable and innovative building solutions and a member of Holcim Group, has been awarded the construction of the City of Calgary’s Noise Barrier Retrofit Program Group 1 Project. This project marks Lafarge’s expansion beyond precast noise wall panel fabrication into full-scale noise barrier construction, reinforcing its infrastructure solutions portfolio and demonstrating its ability to meet evolving urban needs.

The Noise Barrier Retrofit Group 1 Project is a key initiative in the City of Calgary’s strategy to mitigate road traffic noise. By replacing and upgrading outdated noise barriers in targeted areas, the project aims to enhance residents’ quality of life by reducing noise levels in nearby neighbourhoods. Lafarge will take on the critical tasks of design, material supply, manufacturing,  and installation, ensuring the barriers meet the City’s performance standards while integrating seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

“We’re excited to bring our infrastructure expertise to this project and collaborate with the City of Calgary to create quieter, healthier communities. This project marks an important expansion for Lafarge as we move into the construction of noise barrier solutions, and we are committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable infrastructure.”

Richard Hiscox| General Manager, GCA Construction

Lafarge’s approach will leverage its expertise in advanced engineering and materials technology to ensure the durability and effectiveness of the noise barriers. To minimize the project's environmental impact, Lafarge is exploring the use of sustainable materials such as low-carbon concrete and other eco-friendly alternatives. These measures align with Lafarge’s commitment to reducing emissions and promoting sustainable urban development.

This project will also provide economic benefits through job creation and local procurement. The construction phase is expected to generate employment opportunities for local trades and subcontractors, contributing to the region’s economic growth.

“Entering the noise barrier construction market is a significant milestone for Lafarge. We are not just supplying sound walls—we are actively building the infrastructure that enhances community well-being. Our focus is on delivering long-lasting, high-performance sound walls that improve quality of life while maintaining our commitment to sustainability.”

Leroy Geale| Senior Project Manager, GCA Construction

Lafarge is solidifying its role as a comprehensive noise wall infrastructure provider by taking on both fabrication and construction. This project underscores Lafarge’s adaptability and commitment to building resilient, sustainable communities across Canada.
