Lafarge Canada and The Daniels Corporation announce First Carbon Smart Design collaboration using advanced concrete mixed design technology in Downtown Toronto
TORONTO, ON, Nov. 27, 2024 - Lafarge Canada, and its subsidiary Innocon, today announced a pioneering collaboration with The Daniels Corporation driving sustainable construction by leveraging carbon smart design principles and optimizing concrete mix designs at the Daniels on Parliament development located in downtown Toronto. This landmark project involves the use of approximately 31,000 cubic meters of ECOPact® concrete1, covering an industry-leading 75% of the project’s concrete requirement. As a result, the collaboration is projected to reduce the building’s embodied carbon footprint by up to 25 per cent compared to standard concrete.
“We are dedicated to leading the way in innovative construction in the GTA by providing more sustainable building solutions that maintain high performance and efficiency,” said Andy Unger, VP, Concrete, Lafarge Canada (East). “Our products not only meet the most rigorous demands of modern construction but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Our teams have worked tirelessly to provide The Daniels Corporation with smart mix designs that are customized to each component of the building to deliver both performance and reduced embodied carbon. This first project will certainly set a new benchmark for the industry.”
Throughout the collaborative endeavor, Innocon conducted a comprehensive assessment for each phase of the project, employing approximately 38 distinct ECOPact® mix designs and schedule flexibility to achieve substantial carbon savings2 while maintaining construction timelines. This partnership not only marks the highest use of ECOPact® concrete in high-rise construction in Eastern Canada by Innocon to date but also demonstrates that significant sustainability improvements can be realized without compromising efficiency. The initiative sets a new benchmark for how strategic collaboration in design can drive progress in the construction industry.
“This unique initiative marks a progressive milestone in how we collaborate to build high-quality living spaces sustainably,” said David Kelly, President, Innocon. “We aim to establish a new standard for sustainable construction in Toronto and to promote further adoption of ECOPact®, our low-carbon concrete solution, in the construction industry.”
“Collaborating with forward-thinking partners like Lafarge and Innocon enables us to drive real progress in decarbonizing new home construction,” said Adam Molson, Vice President of The Daniels Corporation. “Through our data-driven partnership, we’re able to make significant strides toward reducing emissions in the homes we build. Our goal is to accelerate the shift toward sustainable practices in construction as quickly as possible.”
The Daniels on Parliament project, located at 365 Parliament Street in Toronto’s Regent Park consists of one 25-storey tower and one 10-storey tower, offering 642 residential units, underground parking, and retail units at ground level. Construction is in progress and is expected to occupy in mid-2025.
