Innovating Towards Carbon Neutrality: Lafarge Canada’s Collaborative Trial with Aecon and CarbiCrete

At Lafarge Canada, our commitment to sustainability is not just about adhering to standards; it's sometimes about setting them. In an exciting collaboration with Aecon Group and CarbiCrete, and managed by Innocon, a member of Lafarge, we have embarked on a trial at Aecon’s Training and Innovation Centre that intersects a net-zero future with the construction industry in Canada.

Testing low-carbon construction materials provides a great opportunity for shared knowledge and learning about how these materials could be adopted on a broader scale. We're pleased to be part of conducting this pilot and advancing sustainable construction practices to help address the challenges and opportunities of climate change and energy efficiency in our industry.

The question has always been, can concrete truly be carbon neutral? The journey towards answering that is underway as we recently poured Lafarge Canada's advanced ECOPact low-carbon concrete mix, marking a pivotal first step in our ambitious project. This pour is not just about laying a physical foundation but laying the groundwork for sustainable practices that can become the industry standard.

Collaboration and Innovation

This project is a testament to the power of collaboration. Working alongside our partners at Aecon Group and CarbiCrete, we are exploring the possibilities of carbon-neutral construction and working towards building a structure that functions and emits zero carbon into the environment.
Our teams are driven by a shared vision to push the boundaries of what's possible, leveraging technology and innovative materials.

The use of low-carbon concrete represents the single greatest opportunity to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment. We’re pleased to be supplying our cement-free concrete blocks to this project and proud to be collaborating with the innovative teams at both Aecon and Lafarge Canada to continue to decarbonize the construction sector.

What’s Next?

As we continue this trial, we remain focused on the potential impacts of our innovations. Is a completely carbon-neutral structure possible in Canada? We believe so, and this trial at Aecon’s Training and Innovation Centre is crucial to making that possibility a reality. Stay tuned as we continue to share updates, insights, and results from this exciting venture.
