Our Commitments To Nature

Our nature strategy sets out measurable 2030 targets to restore and preserve biodiversity and water while at the same time bringing more nature into cities

At Lafarge, we measure and monitor our developments for biodiversity within our pits and quarries and freshwater withdrawal throughout all sites to allow for better target-setting and the measurement of improvements.

As a member of the Holcim Group, Lafarge is committed to delivering our actions in a rigorous, science-based manner.

Freshwater

Lafarge is committed to a 25% reduction in freshwater withdrawal (L/t cementitious material) by 2025 by managing our water responsibly and sustainably. To improve our measurement of this metric, all aggregate and ready-mix concrete sites are working to have meters in place to measure freshwater withdrawal by the end of 2023. Other actions such as rainwater harvesting, stormwater management and water recycling have been implemented throughout many sites in Canada.

Biodiversity

Lafarge is committed to a measurable positive impact on biodiversity, in comparison to a 2017 baseline, by following the Holcim Quarry Rehability and Biodiversity Directive, which sets the framework to manage risks and measures to protect and enhance biodiversity. Baseline biodiversity measurements were completed for aggregate sites across Canada in 2017 using the Holcim Biodiversity Indicator Reporting System (BIRS). A second assessment was conducted in 2022, showing an increase in biodiversity for 50% of sites in Western Canada.

Partnerships

We support an active role for businesses in enhancing nature. However, partnerships with local experts are crucial to optimize our impact. We advocate collaboration that accelerates action.
